(Formerly "The Enterprising Engineer")

This event was designed to be of benefit to students who are planning to enter industry and students who would like to set up their own business. Invited speakers and in-house staff delivered presentations and workshops.

Students worked in groups to write a business plan, build a model of their new product, produce a patent application and design a poster. Each team then presented their product to a panel of judges (The Dragons) in an attempt to win funding for their business.

The winning team was The Edge Group (Chinwe Njoku, Laura Dixon, Lei Gao, Ravi Chauhan, Simon Howroyd) trading as Iris Apertures. They produced a camera which used a new material for the lens.

The Edge Group received £250, which was kindly donated by The Systems Engineering Innovation Centre.

The winning team was 'Snubber' (Yingying Seow, Wai Ting Chan, Avnish Doshi and Will Kinghorn). They presented their Midas Kitchen range, which, with the use of new technology enabled the doors of kitchen cupboards to become completely transparent.

Two participants (both members of Snubber) also won £20 each for the re-name the event competition:
Wai Ting Chan - 'Business Enter-Prize'
Will Kinghorn - 'Design it, build it, pitch it, win it.' .

However, Snubber did not quite monopolise the winnings! Tim Swift a member of the team 'Bananas' won the £50 prize for the best written review of the event, which will appear here soon.

The Enterprising Engineer (26th - 28th March 2007)

Glynis has written a summary of the event for an Engineering Subject Centre guide and photographs were taken during the event.

This event proved so popular that it will now run twice in 2008!  The first event is scheduled for 17 - 19 March 2008 with the second scheduled for 9 - 11 April 2008.  Both events will be held at the engCETL in the Keith Green Building.
