Placement Year and the Diploma in Industrial Studies
Around 60% of undergraduate engineering students at Loughborough elect to spend a year in industry as part of their degree programme. On satisfactory completion this leads to the award of the Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).
Employers often view the placement as part of their graduate recruitment process, providing them with an opportunity to assess the abilities of individual students. For students the placement provides experience, motivation and further develops their employability skills.

These are the requirements for students to qualify for the Diploma in Industrial Studies:
- Complete at least 45 weeks on placement
- Submit satisfactory reports at intervals throughout the placement
- Receive satisfactory interim and final reports from their industrial supervisor
- Complete a 5000 word dissertation involving background reading and research
During the placement the student is visited twice by a university supervisor, initially near the start of the placement to discuss the training programme and meet the industrial supervisor and later to review progress and agree on a dissertation subject.
