Industry Activities

Involving industrialists in teaching

This project involved the writing of a guide which will provide advice and inspiration for academics who are beginning to work with industry.  The guide includes case studies from the perspective of industry, students and academics.   Case studies written by industrialists include those from Alan Hall, Chemical Engineer at Syngenta and Alan Curtis, Research Engineer at JCB.

Case studies of industrial practice in project management

This project has improved the industrial content by providing case studies of good practice from project managers, giving real life examples of how they manage their activities.  The case studies are used as a teaching resource by James Flint, Lecturer in Electronic & Electrical Engineering.  Read our case studies which include those from project managers at Praxis, Unilever and E.ON.

Business Simulation Software

Richard Newman and Melanie King supported Professor Rob Thring with the use of the business simulation software package 'Marketplace' with Part D MEng Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering students.  The business simulation was integrated in to the Part D management module 'Business Model' delivered by John Grover, External Lecturer.
Engage
Employer Engagement Project

engCETL was involved with the Engineering Subject Centre employer engagement project Engage.   The aim of the project was to facilitate dialogue between employers and engineering, physical sciences and materials academics in higher education.  Richard Newman was the Co-ordinator for the Building Partnerships working group which includes industry representatives from Unilever, Lloyd's Register and Network Rail.  The Building Partnerships group has created several resources for employers including two University contact lists; one for Engineering and the other for Physical Sciences.  The contact lists enable employers to approach the appropriate individual within each university.

The Building Partnerships Group has also created two case studies of good practice in employer engagement.  These highlight how Network Rail worked in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University to establish the Foundation degree in Railway Engineering and how Lloyds Register has developed close links with the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University.  Malcolm Carr-West who is Deputy Co-ordinator of the Group has also written a useful document for employers entitled Working with a university.

The Engage Conference Higher Education and the Workplace - supporting employer engagement in engineering and physical science was held at Broadway House Conference Centre in London on 15 January 2008.  The conference was attended by over 80 people from industry, higher education, professional bodies and sector skills councils.  The University contact lists, case studies and other useful resources are available from the Resources page of the Engage conference website.  The Engage Project Report is now available from the Engineering Subject Centre website.
Ashley - Rolls-Royce
Student Placement Case Study at Rolls-Royce

Ashley Barnes, who was a student on the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering course, has written a case study about his experience whilst on placement with Rolls-Royce in Derby and Bristol.   The case study is one of five written by IME students which gives potential students an idea of what it is like on placement in industry.  The case studies and information about the course, which is sponsored by a consortium of companies, are available from the IME website

Promoting the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering degree programme

Richard Newman delivered a workshop at the ASET Conference in Cardiff.  The use of student placement case studies to promote a manufacturing engineering degree course.

Industrial Placement Guide for employers

An Industrial Placement Guide for employers has been published by the Engineering Subject Centre.  The new Guide for Employers was edited by Richard Newman.

The Enterprising Engineer

The Enterprising Engineer event is designed to be of benefit to students who are planning to enter industry and students who would like to set up their own business. Presentations are given by internal and external speakers with time for group work. Each group develops a new product and enters a Dragons' Den type scenario with their new product. There is a £250 prize for the winning team, which has been donated by the Systems Engineering Innovation Centre.
