Research conducted in the department of Design & Technology by a PHD student, Clare Allsop, has shown that a meta-level approach to the teaching of CAD, i.e. teaching 3D modelling strategies rather than tool-based tactics can improve a student's grasp of CAD tools significantly. Preliminary results show that students following the strategic learning method developed by Clare can, on average, receive 10% higher marks in CAD modelling assessments. A preliminary web-based tool has been developed to lead students through the method but the tool is rather rudimentary and requires further development before it can come into general use. The details of this proposal, with assistance from Clare, specifically in regard to the Key Dates and Activities below. The aim of this proposal is to obtain the necessary expertise and time to develop the web-based learning resource to the stage where it can be used as a learning resource for all D&T first year students, and to consider the development for associated resources that would benefit Engineering students.
Since the initiation of this project, Alister Fraser, also from Design and Technology, has been creating the content for the tool.
