Maple Study Worksheets

Date: January, 2004

Proposed By: Chris Reilly (Chemical Engineering)

The Department of Chemical Engineering delivers Module CGA011 (Mathematical Methods in Chemical Engineering I) to Part A students as a combination of lectures, tutorials and computing problem classes. The students are guided through solving mathematical problems in the computing problem classes using Maple software. The mathematical problems students are expected to work through during the first part of Semester 1 are of an A-level standard, but applied in an engineering context. A set of study materials has been produced to accompany the students through the problems and introduce students to using Maple to solve them.

During Semester 2, the mathematical problems are at a higher level and introduce concepts that most students will not be familiar with. No Maple-based study notes currently exist to accompany the more advanced subjects. This project involved reviewing and evaluating the existing set of study materials that accompany Semester 1 classes and develop a similar set of study materials to guide students in using Maple to solve higher level mathematical problems.

Brief Description of the Development Work
This project involved working through the existing study materials to gain familiarity with Maple. A short pedagogic evaluation of the existing material being used by the current Part A class was included, with feedback from students and academic staff to suggest any recommended improvements. A set of more advanced study materials, in a style consistent with the existing ones, were developed and made available for students to access from Learn during computing problem classes.
