An academic and engCETL educational technologist will work together to refine and update the content of the web based Sustainable Design tool 'Information/Inspiration' (www.informationinspiration.org.uk) which resides on the Department of Design and Technology server space.  At present it actively used by second and third year Industrial Design and Technology students undertaking Sustainable Design focused design projects and A-level students undertaking design projects as part of the Sustainable Design Awards programme, run by Practical Action (ITDG).  It is also freely available on the internet and is publicised via the Design Council website.  It was also integrated into the ‘Toolbox for Sustainable Design’ which was launched to 37 Engineering academics via the Engineering Subject Centre in January 2005.

'Information/Inspiration' was the first Sustainable Design tool to be developed especially to meet the specific requirements of industrial designers.  It combines together design-focused information and inspirational case studies which research has demonstrated meets the needs of designers who are required to consider sustainability issues in their design projects.  Since its conception, 'Information/Inspiration' has proven to be a very useful resource for second and third year students on the Industrial Design and Technology degrees and has also been highlighted as being an interesting resource for engineering students on a number of occasions.

This proposal seeks the resources to enable an existing stock pile of ecodesign information and examples to be reviewed, so that appropriate information can be identified and then 'translated' into an appropriate format for 'Information/Inspiration'.   Following on from this it is proposed that additional research is carried out to identify new Sustainable Design case studies and state-of-the-art information to further develop the tool.
