Industrial Placement website

Date: August, 2004

Proposed By: Dr K Bouazza-Marouf (Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering)

Link: http://engskills.lboro.ac.uk/

The aim of the project was to develop a sandwich placement website. This would provide a central online resource where academic tutors and sandwich placement students can view and download schedules and forms and where students can create and maintain a record of professional training, as is required for the Diploma of Industrial Studies. The facility of maintaining an online training record was to be provided within the context of an existing web-based personal development planning tool, in order to encourage students to engage in personal development planning (PDP). Through the provision of such a resource the staff administration time associated with students on placements will be significantly reduced and the DIS process will also be eased for students.

Brief Project Description
The project required the development of a website on the Learn Server to form the front end to the Engskills version of RAPID, a PDP tool. This website has been developed so that designated users can easily update the contents. The Website needs is accessible to staff and students both on and off campus and allows users to fill out and download set forms and report templates.

There was also a new part of the PDP tool created so that students can create and maintain a log of professional training.

Outcomes of Project
The project website has been set up just for The Wolfson School and is working well. There are also plans for updates to the website, after suggestions from Dr Bouazza-Marouf, which will hopefully be planned for next year. The website is currently being developed for use in every Engineering Department with only 2 deptartments left to do.

The website is a success and has been designed to be sufficiently flexible so that there can be easy dissemination throughout the DIS schemes in the Eng Faculty after piloting the original version within Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
