LabForm - Computer-based lab report submission with built-in feedback.

Date: January, 2010

Proposed By: Henk Versteeg (Wolfson School)

Staff Contacts: Paul Newman

Part A fluid mechanics laboratories currently involve extensive data collection of flow speeds in wind tunnels, followed by large numbers of calculations.  The results of these calculations are then used to inform a short interpretive essay.  The current paper-based format raises two problems: students do not gain immediate feedback as to whether their calculations are correct or not; incorrect calculations can lead to the incorrect conclusions for the essay.  Also the large number of calculations required leads to many students becoming disengaged and failing to get the full benefit of the final analysis.

This project encompasses a computer-based lab report submission system, with the ability to accept students’ result workings and carry out routine (but formative) part-assessment.

Progress: 0%

The initial meeting with Henk produced lots of requirements, and raised a few interesting possibilities for extra features and facilities within the project.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we were unable to guarantee the project could be completed by the Semster 2 deadline, so this project will most likely be carried forward in to the next round of projects.
