Developing virtual lab code to run in Windows Vista

Date: June, 2008 - November, 2008

Proposed By: Dr Richard Blanchard

Staff Contacts: Melanie King

Some distance learning students were having trouble running the three virtual labs developed in Authorware by the EEC, as they don't function in Windows Vista. Students can download a link from Microsoft to fix this, but this is a temporary solution and one that can confuse those students that are not technologically aware. The investigation would focus on seeing if the existing Authorware code can be adapted to be Vista compatible.
This is going to be an issue in the future with the Labs, because the Authorware software is no longer maintained by Macromedia (Adobe) and there is no version available to run on a Windows Vista pc.

The engCETL Panel proposed that only a feasibility study should be carried out covering sustaining the use of the existing software and estimates on re-creating labs (if necessary).

Latest Update - November 2008

Progress: 100%

A Report has been produced outlining the investigations carried out. For students who are experiencing problems:

Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) is a Help program that has been included with Microsoft Windows versions starting with the Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating system. However, the Windows Help program has not had a major update for many releases and no longer meets Microsoft's standards. Therefore, starting with the release of Windows Vista, the Windows Help program will not ship as a feature of Windows. If you want to view 32-bit .hlp files, you must download and install the program (WinHlp32.exe) from the Microsoft Download Center.
