Undergraduate coursework submissions in the Civil and Building Department are made in the period 9-10 on a Monday morning using post-graduate students. Some weeks involve several hundred submissions. An electronic system is required to benefit students, post-graduates, teaching staff and administration staff to speed up the process and to maintain accurate records for student submissions.
Electronic recording of individual coursework assignments at point of submission:
* to record student ID with submission for specific module(s)
* to produce individual receipts (via email) giving student name, ID, module, date & time of submission
* to send list to module staff indicating submissions/non-submissions
Once the system is developed it can then be rolled out to other departments throughout the Engineering Faculty and the University. The Chemical Engineering department have requested to use the system once developed.
Latest Update - October 2009
Progress: 100%
The system is currently being used by the Civil and Chemical Engineering Departments. The intention is now to roll-out the system to the remaning engCETL departments.
Software testing was successfully carried out in September and October. The use of a swipe card presented problems when using a ps2 to usb convertor. This issue has now been resolved (November 2008).
There were no major problems during the pilot phase, and the couple of usability improvements that were suggested have been implemented. Some other extra features have been requested, but these require major changes to the system, so will have to wait until a quieter time.
