IPTME: Supporting and Creating Links with Industry
Date proposed:
17 May 2006.
Proposer: Barry Haworth, Senior Lecturer, IPTME working with Richard Newman, engCETL's Industrial Liaison Officer.
The original proposal was to create new links with industry to promote postgraduate modules and courses, to increase the recruitment of part-time postgraduate students and to develop the course programme. The aim was also to support existing links with industry and create new links to increase DIS placement opportunities for undergraduate students with a particular focus on Applied Design students. The intended deliverables were to support the recruitment of part-time postgraduate students, as well as advise on the development of marketing resources.
For DIS Placements (with a focus on Applied Design students) Richard Newman contacted a range of design and manufacturing companies. In making the initial approach to companies regarding postgraduate courses, Richard contacted 55 companies, to promote the postgraduate packaging courses and a database of industry contacts was created and a record kept of when each company was contacted and the outcome of any discussion. Richard also attended the PDM (Plastics Design & Moulding) Conference on the 28 September 2006, primarily to make contact with design companies to encourage them to offer placements for undergraduate Applied Design students.
Barriers to the success of the project included the reluctance or inability of design companies to offer a placement for an Applied Design student due to their small size and lack of resources.
