I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Pure and Applied Physics, and completed a master of science at Southampton University, before undertaking a PhD in the School of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Plymouth, which was based on the field measurement and analysis of wave loading on coastal structures. I worked in research and teaching at the University of Plymouth from 1992 until 1998 when I joined the Engineering Education Centre at Loughborough University.

I was Manager of the Engineering Education Centre from 2001 to 2005 and also managed nationally funded L&T projects including the FDTL Project Balance and the ESF Project Multi-skills for Advanced Engineering (£200k). I sit on a range of steering committees and management teams for national engineering education projects, including the Management Committee for the Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre, and I also manage and contribute to a diverse range of UK engineering learning and teaching projects.
