About Us

'engCETL' stands for 'Engineering Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning'. It was established in March 2005 and is located in the Faculty of Engineering at Loughborough University in the UK.

The engCETL builds on Loughborough's established excellence in industry focused engineering teaching and provision of learning support to academics through its previous Engineering Education Centre. The engCETL seeks to impact on at least 4,000 students and develop and produce graduates who are employable, entrepreneurial, productive and innovative. Our work is mainly with engineering-related departments, reaching out to other departments at Loughborough University and beyond as projects progress.

Funding is through HEFCE's Centres for Excellence in Teaching (CETL) initiative - their largest ever initiative for teaching and learning. engCETL attracts £0.5 Million annual recurrent funding and additionally had £1.645 Million to build a state of the art engCETL facility located in the heart of the Faculty of Engineering.

engCETL is an active member of the East Midlands CETL Network which comprises nine CETLs based at the Universities of Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Nottingham Trent. The Network has a common goal of enhancing the student experience, and its primary aims are to promote sharing of best practice, innovation, reward and recognition of practitioners in teaching, learning and pedagogic research. The investment into the region of over £31 million through the funding of these CETLs provides a unique opportunity for collaboration in order to maximise the impact of the work of the CETLs, not only within the participating universities but also regionally and nationally.

Wider dissemination is achieved through working closely with the Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre which has a remit to deliver support for learning and teaching to the UK higher education engineering community.  Forthcoming events can be found in our News and Events pages
